Very happy to formally propose and speak on this important motion on behalf of the named Cllrs in support Tara Mines workers. As you know the workers of Tara Mines have been in a state of limbo for a long time now with little sign of a concrete resolution in sight.
It’s important to remember that these men and women are our relatives, friends and neighbours who find themselves in a very uncertain position regarding their and their families futures.
Tara mines has been a hugely important part of all our communities and county for generations past and hopefully future but some kind of clarity about what’s is to happen needs to emerge soon.
This motion’s intent is to call on the Gov to bring forward and implement measures to support working people who find themselves in need of supports through no fault of their own.
The kind of thing I think we can all support. The motion received the unanimous support of all Cllrs present. On this subject we are all agreed.
Text of motion.
“10.1 Submitted by Cathaoirleach Tommy Reilly, Councillors Sean Drew, David Gilroy, Trevor Golden, Edward Fennessy and Michael Gallagher.
Meath Co. Council notes the commitment in the Government's recent budget to the introduction of pay-related job seekers benefit in December 2024. However, this council is supporting SIPTU's Construction Sector campaign on behalf of the Tara Mines workers in calling upon Government to bring forward the implementation date of these proposals and supports the ICTU's position for job seekers benefit to be increased to 70% of average earnings capped at €550 for a minimum of 9 months”
